A driver who was fleeing police at a high rate of speed died when he was thrown from his vehicle after crashing into two trees and a house early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 2:51 a.m. Sunday, when a Richfield police officer saw a Dodge Caravan crash into a stop sign at 62nd Street and Bloomington Avenue, a news release says.

The officer pursued the van for about four blocks, but stopped the pursuit because the man was driving erratically and disregarding traffic laws. The driver continued southbound on Bloomington Avenue at a "high rate of speed," the release notes.

The Star Tribune reports the van was traveling upwards of 100 mph.

Moments later, he crashed into two trees and a house on the 7200 block of Bloomington Avenue and was ejected from the vehicle and died, the release says.

The man, who was the only person in the van, hasn't been identified.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office along with the Minnesota State Patrol are assisting in the investigation, the release notes.
