Driver killed in Minnetonka crash while fleeing police

The 30-year-old driver from Montrose died in the incident.

A driver was killed in a collision in Minnetonka following a police chase on Friday.

Minnetonka Police began pursuit of the suspect, a 30-year-old man from Montrose, on Minnetonka Boulevard after noticing him speeding.

The suspect. driving a Mercury Tracer, continued to flee despite the presence of police and eventually shook their tail.

However, a short time later police came upon the Tracer at Minnetonka Blvd. and Atwater Street, where it had collided with a Volvo just before 2 p.m.

The State Patrol says it had entered the opposing lane as it tried to pass traffic, striking the oncoming Volvo head on.

The Montrose man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Volvo – a 59-year-old woman from Minnetonka – was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The Minnesota State Patrol is conducting accident reconstruction while the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office investigates the chase and surrounding incident, at the request of the Minnetonka Police Department.

The suspect/victim is expected to be identified on Saturday.
