A twenty-six year veteran of the Duluth Police Department has been named the 2012 Police Officer of the Year in Minnesota. Sgt. Brad Wick fatally wounded a home invasion suspect who was involved in a string of crimes. Two officers from the St. Paul Police Department were awarded honorable mentions, Sgt. Bill Haider and Officer Mike Carroll.

Arthur Briggs died of heart failure, so in 1908 his death was said to be of natural causes. But a little research found the police lieutenant was struggling with an intoxicated suspect when he heart gave out. Now his name will be added to the plaque that honors police officers who died in the line of duty.
Duluth loses 'Timber'
A treasured member of the Duluth Police Department has passed. The Duluth News Tribune reports that Timber, one of the department’s former K-9s, had to be put down because of spleen cancer. Timber was forced to retire recently because of poor eyesight, but, had been living with officer Michelle Rafferty, his former police partner. She is planning a book about him.
