Duluth head shop owner, employees indicted on 54 federal charges

Author:

The owner and three employees of a controversial head shop in Duluth have been indicted in federal court on more than 50 alleged drug violations, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

According to the 54-count indictment unsealed Tuesday, 55-year-old Jim Carlson, owner of Last Place on Earth, along with 32-year-old Lava Marie Haugen, 34-year-old Joseph James Gellerman and 24-year-old Jamie Paul Anderson are charged with numerous crimes after federal officials raided the business in July.

According to the Associated Press, the indictment says that from March 2010 through September 2012, Carlson and his employees conspired to obtain and sell items falsely labeled as incense, potpourri and bath salts as a cover for synthetic drugs.

An attorney for Carlson says his client will plead innocent.

In November, the city of Duluth attempted to have the shop shut down, claiming the business is a public nuisance. A St. Louis County District judge held off on the decision until attorneys could present more evidence.
