Health officials have now counted a hundred confirmed or suspected cases of cryptosporidiosis linked to Edgewater Resort and Water Park. The diarrheal illness is caused by a parasite that spreads through human feces in water. Edgewater closed the park and treated facilities with super-chlorinated water, which experts say destroys the bug.

More cases linked to outbreak at Duluth water park

Health officials confirmed 16 cases of cryptosporidiosis and are following reports of 62 others after an outbreak at Edgewater Resort and Water Park. "Crypto" is a parasite that spreads from human feces in water. After learning about the outbreak, Edgewater closed and treated facilities with super-chlorinated water, which kills the parasite.

Disease outbreak linked to Duluth water park

Health officials have confirmed three cases of a diarrheal disease, suspect six others and say there are likely many more that will go unreported in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The News Tribune reports the Edgewater Resort and Water Park closed voluntarily and super-chlorinated all of its water facilities, a process that health officials say will eradicate any threat.

Duluth teen pulled from water near 'the cribs'

A 13-year-old Duluth who was underwater in Lake Superior for more than 30 minutes was clinging to life in a Duluth hospital late Monday after being rescued just off shore. Jeffrey Carlos Watson Jr. had been swimming with friends near an old concrete structure often called the cribs, or Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum, just off Duluth’s Lakewalk waterfront trail. The “mausoleum” is a popular spot for teens on warm days. They climb the structure and then jump into Lake Superior.
