A 58-year-old Eagan lawyer has been suspended indefinitely after he acknowledged an affair with a client whom he billed for time that they had spent having sex, the Pioneer Press reports.
Thomas P. Lowe, will not have the opportunity to be reinstated for at least a year and three months after the decision, filed Jan. 10 by the Minnesota Supreme Court, the newspaper reported.
Lowe was representing the client in a divorce case. The two are both from Valley City, N.D., and had known each other for years, the newspaper said. At points during a seven-month affair, he billed the time as "meetings" or "drafting memos," the Pioneer Press reported.
The married Lowe eventually withdrew as the woman's lawyer, and the woman, who had a history that included past abuse and mental health treatment, tried to commit suicide, the newspaper reported. She then disclosed the affair to hospital officials.
