Eagan outlet mall boosts Twin Cities to top in national retail construction report

A national report released this week by Colliers International finds the Twin Cities leads the country in construction of new retail projects, the Star Tribune reports.

The ranking by the commercial real estate lender is mainly credited to the construction of a $100 million outlet mall in Eagan, not the expansion of the Mall of America in Bloomington.

The outlet mall, which is being built by Baltimore-based Paragon Outlet Partners, consists of six buildings housing more than 100 shops.

The 400,000-square-foot project is one of the few outlet malls to be located in a major metropolitan area, the Star Tribune says.

Paragon announced in December that Saks Fifth Avenue has signed on to become the outlet mall's first tenant.

The developer announced additional clients in June, including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors and J. Crew.

Construction began in June, and the outlet mall is expected to open next August.

Overall, Colliers reports, the Twin Cities leads the nation with some 1.2 million square feet of retail space under construction.
