Ex-boyfriend guilty of 3rd degree murder in Danielle Jelinek's death

More than three years after Danielle Jelinek was last seen alive, her ex-boyfriend has been convicted of murdering her.

A jury found Aaron Schnagl, 31, guilty of third-degree murder – agreeing with prosecutors who argued he provided cocaine that led to Jelinek's death in December of 2012, KARE 11 reports.

However, as KSTP reports, Schnagl was acquitted on a charge of trying to conceal her body. He told investigators that after a night of drinking and using cocaine at his Chisago County home, he woke up to find Jelinek gone, having left clothes, shoes, and her phone behind.

Volunteers joined law enforcement in a search for Jelinek that lasted five months before her body was discovered in a swampy area near Schnagl's home.

KARE says that during Schnagl's trial Cory Jelinek testified that her sister, who was 27, had battled an addiction to methamphetamine, having been through treatment three times. Danielle was living with Cory in Oakdale at the time of her death.

Schnagl is already imprisoned on a drug charge. The third-degree murder conviction could add as much as 13 years to his prison time, KARE says.

The Star Tribune reports Schnagl's attorney expressed relief about the acquittal on the charge of concealing a body, which could have brought a sentence of up to 25 years.
