An exchange student from Saudi Arabia has died from an apparent drowning at a park in southern Minnesota.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office says it was called to Mound Creek Park in rural Brown County – west of Mankato – at 2:38 p.m. Saturday after a report of a possible drowning.

The body of 23-year-old Assaf Hussain Alharbi was pulled from the water at 4:12 p.m. by sheriff's deputies.

Despite the rescue efforts of first responders, Alharbi was pronounced dead.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Alharbi was living in Brookings, South Dakota, having come to the U.S. as an exchange student from the Middle East.

Mound Creek Park is a relatively new park in the southwest corner of Brown County, and is located at the Wellner-Hageman Flood Control Dam, according to its website.

The dam creates a 70-acre reservoir that is used for leisure activities.
