Explosion rips apart section of home in Duluth

A neighborhood in Duluth was rocked by an explosion that severely damaged the garage and first floor of a house.

FOX 21 reports the explosion happened at 615 Everett St. in the Morley Heights neighborhood just after 9 a.m. Thursday morning, with a propane tank thought to be to blame.

Two people were at home at the time, the TV station notes, but they managed to escape unharmed.

In a news release, the Duluth Police Department said they also searched for a dog thought to have been in the home at the time, but was found at a neighboring home a short while later.

The damage to the building is estimated at $230,000, police said.

KBJR reports the explosion is thought to have come from the garage, the door to which was blown off and found on the ground nearby.

The Duluth News Tribune reports the first-floor windows of the two-story building were blown out of their frames, the walls of the home's indoor gym ripped apart, and large chunks of the roof were blown off.

"I saw a large orange explosion out the window,” witness and neighbor Dave Frankenfeld told the paper. "It was loud and it shook the house."

Assistant Duluth Fire Chief Clint Reff told the News Tribune there was no subsequent fire in the house, with the explosion said to have "self-extinguished."

Although thought to have been gas-related, the cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed as it's still being investigated.
