Fairview Southdale Hospital plans to spend $39 million to double the size of its emergency room, the Business Journal reports. Fairview expects to open the renovated ER by summer of 2015.

The Pioneer Press says the Edina hospital plans to name the upgraded emergency center after Carl Platou, who led Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services for 40 years. Platou died last year.

The trauma department at Fairview Southdale was last updated in 1985. More than 40,000 patients visit the ER annually, but the facility was designed to treat about 30,000 patients.
