Friends have identified the man killed in a crash with a fleeing suspect Friday night as 41-year-old Lashay Whittaker.

Whittaker was driving to his home in Mounds View when his car was broadsided by a van driven by a 26-year-old suspect, who was fleeing police after threatening his girlfriend's son with a machete.

The father-of-two was killed in the crash, which police say split his car in two such was the impact. The suspect also crashed into a nearby residential garage, collapsing it.

Family and friends have been paying tribute to the DeLaSalle High School grad on social media, with Ahmed Whittaker writing: "Growing up he may have been one of the littlest, but he had the biggest smile."

"My heart aches for the Whittaker family!" wrote Quia Brown. "This is so unexpected and shocking, he was such a good man!"

Whittaker had been cutting hair at the Grooming House on Selby Avenue for 17 years, KARE 11 reports, with customers still arriving on Saturday for appointments they had booked with him.

Family and friends meanwhile gathered at his home in Mounds View, where the Star Tribune reports they paid tribute to an innocent man whose life was cut tragically short.
