Multiple Twin Cities news outlets, including KSTP TV, are reporting that family members have identified the woman killed by a large falling tree on Friday night as Nina MacKay, 56, of Eden Prairie.

MacKay was walking her two dogs on a city trail near Mitchell Lake in Eden Prairie when the accident occurred, according to the Star Tribune. Another woman MacKay was walking with was not injured, city spokeswoman Katie Bengtson told the paper.

KARE 11 reports that emergency crews responded to the corner of George Moran Drive and Belfast Cove about 5:20 pm on Friday. When they arrived, they found Mackay pinned under a large basswood tree. She died at the scene.

In a statement released on Saturday to KARE 11, MacKay's family described her as a terrific wife and loving mother.

"Her bright eyes, genuine smile and infectious spirit brought life to everything and everyone she touched," the statement read. "Next to her family, Nina's passions were her dogs and fitness. A daily hour long run and hour walk for the dogs were her norm. We lost her doing the things she loved, exercising her dogs with a walk in the park."

The Star Tribune reports that one of the dogs was briefly trapped in the tree branches, and the other ran home. Both of the dogs were uninjured, according to the paper.

KARE 11 reports that officials are trying to determine why the tree fell. Winds were gusting up to 23 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The basswood tree was 90 years old and had a 30-inch diameter.

The part of the trail where the accident happened is expected to be reopened to the public Saturday, city officials told the Star Tribune.
