Famous dining car Mickey's named best greasy spoon in Minnesota

Mickey's Diner in St. Paul has been named the best diner in Minnesota.

The famous dining car has been immortalized in films including "The Mighty Ducks" and "Jingle All the Way" and according to a ranking by Business Insider, is the best greasy spoon Minnesota has to offer.

The website compared customer reviews on Yelp, local newspaper reviews and culinary awards to find "the most popular and beloved diner in every state," with Minnesota's art-deco dining car on on West Seventh Street coming out on top.

Food is only one element of the study. Business Insider looked for places people call "their spot," a place where "the coffee tastes like dirt some days, but the wait staff knows your name and order by heart."

One Yelp reviewer noted that the diner leaves you "greasier than an adolescent boy's face," while others were full of praise for the diner's famous pancakes, as well as its hash browns and stews.

Designed to resemble a classic railroad dining car and measuring just 50-feet by 10-feet, the diner is a St. Paul institution, opening in 1937. In 1983 it was awarded historic status, according to MinnPost.

Mickey's featured in a poll of Pioneer Press readers in September who were asked to name their favorite brunch spot in the Twin Cities, however it only finished 18th in the poll – which was won by the Bon Vie Cafe, also in St. Paul.

And continuing St. Paul's success in the culinary world, the Blue Door Pub in Selby Avenue was named among the 21 best chicken wing joints in the country by Thrillist website.
