Fargo cook McKenna Dinkel has missed work since suffering a serious spinal injury after a freak accident that has left her fighting to walk again.

Valley News Live reports the extreme sports enthusiast was snow-tubing with her family on Dec. 26 when she hit an ice block, was thrown into the air and fell hard to the ground, paralyzing her from the waist down.

Now, the restaurant community is joining together to help get her back on her feet – literally – and back into the kitchen, by holding a benefit in her honor Wednesday night.

Dinkel's insurance will only cover some of her medical bills, so her employer Shotgun Sally's is holding the fundraiser Wednesday evening. at 1515 42nd St.

A GoFundMe page set up for Dinkel has raised more than $2,500. It explains that she has regained some of her functions below the waist after challenging therapy, and she's attempting to walk with a walker and forearm braces.

Dinkel has set herself a goal of walking again by August, telling Valley News that's when her best friend gets married, and "I said I refuse to go down the aisle in leg braces and a walker, or in a wheelchair."

The benefit starts at 4 p.m. at Shotgun Sally's, at 1515 42nd St. in Fargo. It includes a spaghetti feed, a silent auction, and performances by several local bands.

You can find out more on the Shotgun Sally's Facebook page.
