Pierre Collins will go on trial next January on charges of murdering his 10-year-old son, Barway.
The 33-year-old appeared in court Tuesday for a brief hearing, during which WCCO reports he waived his right to a quick trial to give his lawyers time to prepare his defense against the first-degree murder charge he is facing.
His trial date has been set for Jan. 4, 2016, with his next court appearance on October 19.
Barway disappeared from outside his apartment building in Crystal on March 18, prompting a metro-wide search effort. His body was found in the Mississippi River near Brooklyn Center on April 11.
Prosecutors have previously said that Collins had struggled with debts and had recently taken out a second life insurance policy on his son.
KSTP notes that a first-degree murder indictment on Collins was released last week, saying he had killed Barway "with premeditation and with intent to effect the death of that person or another," with a second degree murder charge saying similar.
Collins faces life in prison with no parole if found guilty of first-degree murder.
