Feds probe Ecolab's deal to acquire Champion for $2.2B

The U.S. Department of Justice is asking St. Paul-based Ecolab for more information regarding its plan to acquire Houston-based Champion Technologies Inc., the Star Tribune reports. Federal antitrust regulators could be concerned with possible overlaps in Ecolab's energy businesses.

Ecolab, provider of commercial and industrial cleaning products and services, still expects the deal to close before the end of the year, the Pioneer Press reports.

In October, Ecolab announced its plan to buy Champion Technologies, a maker of specialty chemicals for the oil and gas industries, for about $2.2 billion in cash and stock.

Ecolab acquired Nalco Holding Co., a water treatment firm, last year for $5.4 billion.
