Fire damages cars, shuts down University of Minnesota parking ramp

Publish date:

Thick dark smoke was visible on the campus of the University of Minnesota and in parts of downtown Minneapolis after a fire in a parking ramp on the campus's East Bank.

KARE reported that three cars were damaged in the blaze, which broke out on the sixth floor of a ramp that is operated by Fairview University Hospital. The ramp is located near the intersection of Delaware Street SE and SE Harvard Street.

The parking ramp was closed to incoming traffic while Minneapolis fire crews battled the blaze. Pedestrians were also being kept away from the parking ramp due to the amount of grayish-black smoke.

The Star Tribune said there were no injuries in connection with the car fires.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, a university spokesman described the fires as “under control.” He said there is no immediate word on how the blazes began.
