Newly renovated skate park called a total loss after fire

A Mankato skate park that just completed a major renovation was destroyed in a weekend fire.

KEYC in Mankato reported the damage estimate for the blaze at the Chesley Roller Sport Park in Mankato is put at around $150,000. The Mankato Free Press reported the fire broke out on Saturday morning and about 20 firefighters responded, spending much of the day battling the fire. Crews began tearing down the indoor building portion of the park after fire officials determined the building was a total loss.

Lt. Scott LeBrun of the Mankato Department of Public Safety Fire Division said it could be difficult to determine the fire's origin and so the Mankato Fire Dept. has called in the state Fire Marshal's Office to handle the investigation.

The Mankato Family YMCA operates Chesley Roller Sport Park; CEO John Kind said the agency is already thinking about rebuilding. The park is popular with the city's teenagers. The Y had just completed a renovation of all the jumps and quarter pipes inside the park and had even added some smaller equipment for younger skaters. After a month-long hiatus, Chesley Roller Sport Park was just about to reopen.
