A tragic accident saw a Minnesota firefighter suffer a fatal fall from a sliding door on the second floor of a property near Big Fish Lake.
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says Chad Kraemer, 40, fell between 10-12 feet from a sliding glass door, landing on a concrete patio below.
It was a "deck door" type sliding door but no deck or elevated patio has yet been built on the house in Collegeville Township, and there's no barrier stopping him from using the door.
Family told police he'd gone to bed for the evening between 11 p.m. and midnight. He was found on the patio around 4:45 a.m.
Kraemer had been a member of the Cold Spring Fire Department for 19 years, and his co-workers were among the responders called to the scene in what was a "traumatic call" for the fire department, the Stearns County Sheriff said.
According to an obituary, Kraemer was a father of three, and as well as being a firefighter, he also owned family company Kraemer Trucking and Excavating with his brother.
"Chad always treated everyone with the same level of respect," the obituary said. "He had a way of lighting up any room, but most of all Chad loved being at the lake and spending time with his family."
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring.
Another second-story fall was reported in Minnesota this past weekend, with a three-year-old girl falling 15 feet out of a screen window in Spring Valley. She was said to be responsive on the way to the hospital.
