Former Minn. man dies in Afghanistan plane crash

Author:

The pilot of a civilian cargo plane that died in a crash along with six other Americans in Afghanistan Monday grew up in southeast Minnesota.

The Star Tribune reports 37-year-old Jeremy Lipka, who lived in Michigan for about ten years, graduated from high school in Pine Island. His stepfather, Dave Buttman, says Lipka just visited Minnesota two weeks ago.

The crash happened shortly after takeoff from the Bagram Air Base, CNN reports. The National Air Cargo Boeing 747-400 was en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

The Taliban has taken responsibility, according to Al Jazeera, but a NATO military coalition spokesperson says the claims are false.

Graphic video of the crash has been circulating online.
