Charges: Former teacher had sex with students at Stillwater home

A former western Wisconsin high school history teacher is accused of having sex with two 16-year-old students at his home in Stillwater last year, according to charges filed Thursday in Washington County District Court.

After exchanging numerous phone, text and email messages, 36-year-old Matthew Robert Koenen lured the girls to his house separately on multiple occasions where they engaged in sexual intercourse while his wife, who also taught at Grantsburg High School, was away, the complaint stated.

The Star Tribune reports the first girl involved was a member of a National History Day group that traveled to Washington D.C. She considered Koenen to be her mentor and confidant before their relationship became romantic last August.

The complaint stated the girl "trusted the defendant and shared many personal thoughts and feelings" with him.

The second 16-year-old girl was approached by Koenen because of her slipping grades prior to having intercourse.

Investigators say at least two other underage girls had also been to Koenen's house while his wife was gone.

Koenen was asked to resign in May after he admitted to the school that he exchanged personal text messages with one of the girls.

He's been charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and was booked into jail Thursday evening.
