He opened his first salon, Horst & Friends, in Minneapolis in 1965.

In 1978, Rechelbacher launched Aveda Corp. with a staff of two. He built it into a brand known for its eco-friendly practices and lush-smelling products and eventually sold the company to Estee Lauder in 1997 for a $300 million, according to the newspaper.

Rechelbacher started Intelligent Nutrients in 1995. It was a company that specialized in organic, nontoxic health and beauty products.

"The planet has lost one of its most passionate friends. So have we," the website says. "To know Horst was to wake up the world around you, to your own potential, to a new way of thinking. His impact truly does live on in salons, shops, fields and minds worldwide. And his mission continues."
