Freezing rain, ice closes northeastern Minn. schools

Freezing rain in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin is closing several schools Friday.

The Duluth News Tribune reports Duluth, Superior and Hermantown schools are closed along with Lake Superior College. Several other districts in the area have delayed or canceled classes.

Roads and sidewalks are coated with up to a quarter-inch of ice. A freezing rain advisory for areas including Duluth and Superior is in effect until noon.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for Itasca, Koochiching, Cass and Beltrami counties until noon where greater ice accumulations are expected.

Road crews have been salting and sanding roads since 2:30 a.m. Northlands NewsCenter reports main roads and highways are in good condition, but secondary roads are slick.

About 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected in the region Friday afternoon.
