Freshii's experiment with Target is coming to an end.
The health food chain announced this week that it will be shuttering its 18 locations within Target stores over the coming months.
Most of its locations were in Chicago, with the sole Minnesota restaurant found in the Target at The Quarry, northeast Minneapolis.
The Canadian company was among the partners that teamed up with Target two years ago as the Minneapolis retailer looked to upgrade its in-store food options to offer healthier, higher-quality fare.
As the Star Tribune reported at the time, Freshii's menu of "fresh ingredients, devoid of anything fried or served on a bun," was a far cry from the hotdogs and Pizza Hut pies previously sold at the Target cafe.
But the partnership was ultimately unsuccessful, with Freshii saying in its recent results that "sales levels of these locations did not support a continued investment of resources by both parties."
In a statement to the Business Journal, Target said it'll be evaluating how to use its Freshii spaces in the future.
It said it made the decision to move away from Freshii as "it did not meet our shared business goals."
Freshii's other Minnesota locations, including in Gaviidae Common and the Mall of America, are not affected by the closures.
