Friends of 16-year-old Anna Lynn Hurd are leaving memorials in the Maplewood park where she was found dead over the weekend.
Maplewood's police chief tells WCCO authorities are investigating Hurd's death as a homicide. The Ramsey County medical examiner's officer reportedly determined that Hurd died of puncture wounds consistent with a stabbing.
Fox-9 reports authorities initially asked the public for help finding a person of interest in the case. They later withdrew that request, saying without explanation that the man is no longer being sought.
Police Chief Dave Kvam told the Pioneer Press investigators do not believe there is a danger to the general public. A school district spokeswoman told the newspaper counselors will be on hand Monday at North High School, which Hurd formerly attended.
Authorities responded to a report of a person requiring medical attention around 4:30 a.m. Saturday in Hillside Park, near McKnight Road and Ripley Avenue. Hurd was found dead at the scene when police arrived. Police provided few details about her condition, but said the victim had been violently assaulted, the Star Tribune reported.
