A man who escaped custody tried to evade police by hiding in a Catholic school in northern Minnesota.

According to the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, the 26-year-old was arrested at 1:42 p.m. Tuesday on suspicion of probation violating, possession of methamphetamine and escape from custody.

They say the man had fled a Department of Corrections in the 600 block of Beltrami Avenue.

His escape took him across the street to the St. Philip's Catholic School, where he entered the building as children were heading outside, according to the sheriff's office.

Police found him "immediately" hiding under a desk in an empty third floor classroom.

He was taken into custody without any further incident and is now facing charges.
