The lead lobby group in the campaign to legalize gay marriage in Minnesota spent $2 million, leaders said Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

Minnesotans United for All Families leader Richard Carlbom disclosed the figure to AP prior to a mid-June campaign spending report deadline. Roughly one-quarter of the money, $400,000 to $500,000, paid for TV ads, Carlbom told the AP.

The money also paid for 14 lobbyists.

By contrast, the top opposition group, Minnesotans for Marriage, hired three registered lobbyists. Opponents to same-sex marriage had noted that they were vastly outspent, but those exact figures were not immediately available.

Gov. Mark Dayton signed the same-sex marriage bill into law earlier this month, and it takes effect Aug. 1.

Minnesotans United plans to continue its work, primarily in an effort now to support lawmakers who voted for the bill.
