Gay marriage map of the US: New figures show where same-sex couples are living

Figures released this week by the government have given new insight into America's gay married couples since the introduction of same-sex marriage – and the New York Times has mapped it all.

Three years ago the Supreme Court gave same-sex marriages, performed in states that allows them, the same recognition that straight married couples get.

But as the New York Times points out, record keeping at local and state level makes it hard to determine how many same-sex married couples there are across the country.

An answer came through tax record data released this week by the Treasury Department, that has made it possible to create a reasonably accurate picture of where same-sex married couples live based on their joint tax returns (it's accurate, the department says, because 97.5 percent of same-sex married couples file jointly).

Minnesota, as of 2014, had 4,000 gay married couples living in the state who filed their taxes jointly – up from 2,735 in 2013, the year the same-sex marriage bill was passed in Minnesota.

Of these, 2,450 were female married couples and 1,550 male, and it's more than likely to have gone up since then.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 554 zip-code area (mainly Hennepin County) has the highest concentration of same-sex married couples, with almost half (1,997) of them living in the county – 1.17 percent of total marriages in the area.

Minneapolis has the 18th and 19th highest rates of female and male same-sex marriage in the country, the report says.

The NY Times map shows that the east metro (551 zip) including St. Paul has 865 same-sex marriages, making up 0.64 percent of married couples in the area.

The northeast corner of Minnesota also has an above average rate, with the 88 same-sex marriages in the Duluth area (558 zip-codes) accounting for 0.44 percent, while the North Shore (556 zip) has 13 same-sex marriages – 0.36 percent of all married couples.

The area with the lowest rate of gay married couples is a region of western Minnesota (562 zip), where the 16 same-sex married couples represent just 0.05 of the total married couples.

Minnesota has just over 1.044 million straight married couples, the report shows.

Across the U.S., there were 131,080 same-sex married couples as of 2014, compared to more than 52.5 million straight married couples.
