Minneapolis has been called the hippest city in America, and one of the coolest cities in the nation. Can it also be among the nerdiest?

Nerd blogger Randy Nelson says so, ranking Minneapolis No. 5 on his list of the nerdiest cities. Who's nerdier? Atlanta, Portland, Seattle, Sacramento. (Wait, Sacramento?) Check out the slideshow for the full rankings.

As you might expect, Nelson the nerd did some homework. Here are the criteria he used for his list:

Number of annual comic book, video game, anime, and sci-fi / fantasy conventions
People per comic book store
People per video game store
People per traditional gaming store
People per computer store
People per bookstore
People per LARPing group
People per science museum
Distance to the nearest Renaissance fair

New Minneapolis hotel boasts 'inner geek chic'

Minneapolis will soon get a new hotel that its owners are describing as "industrial schoolhouse chic," USA Today reports. Noble House Hotels and Resorts says the new Commons Hotel, scheduled to open in October, is inspired by its ties to the University of Minnesota and the industrial history of the Twin Cities. It embodies "a sense of inner geek in a chic setting," the company said in a press release.
