Get a free beer from Surly – just for donating food to hungry Minnesotans

It's to celebrate the end of the Sunday liquor sales ban.

If you're looking for a way to celebrate the end of the ban on Sunday liquor sales, here's a way to get free beer – and do something good.

Surly Brewing and Surly Gives A Damn (the brewery's volunteer arm) are giving away vouchers for free beer on July 2 if you bring a canned food item into one of six Twin Cities-area liquor stores.

Surly is calling it "Sunday Fund-day," and it's the brewery's way of celebrating Sunday liquor sales becoming legal in Minnesota.

How to get the free beer

All you have to do for your free beer is bring a canned food item into a participating Liquor Barrel location (see the list below) between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 2. In return, you'll get a voucher for a free beer at Surly's beer hall in Minneapolis.

There will also be a Surly beer tasting and the brewery will be giving away other free stuff, like T-shirts.

The canned food – and 10 percent of profits from the liquor stores that day – will be donated to The Food Group, a Minneapolis-based food shelf.

Note: Surly says it's one free beer voucher per person, not per canned food item. But the brewery encourages people to bring more than one can of food.

"Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better way to combine so many firsts. The Food Group was the first charity partner of Surly and [Surly Gives A Damn] way back when, and now they get to be part of the first Sunday Fund-day," Mary Sellke of Surly said in a statement. "We can’t wait to see the impact we can make in our community through serving up food and drinking beer."

The participating Liquor Barrel locations are:

  • Golden Valley Liquor Barrel at 7890 Olson Memorial Hwy. in Golden Valley.
  • W 7th Liquor Barrel at 665 7th Street in St. Paul.
  • New Brighton Liquor Barrel at 2130 Silver Lake Road in New Brighton.
  • Parkway Liquor at 301 Wheelock Pkwy. in St. Paul.
  • Mahtomedi Liquor Barrel at 3124 Century Ave. N. in Mahtomedi.
  • Brooklyn Park Liquor Barrel at 8520 Edinburgh Centre Dr. in Brooklyn Park.
