The first Republican to officially announce a run against Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton in 2014 apologized to local reporters for giving his first interview to the Wall Street Journal the day of his announcement.

On Wednesday, Orono businessman Scott Honour declined local inquiries. He sought to make up for it by doing several local interviews Thursday.

Honour filed paperwork with the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board Wednesday, listing Brian Clark as his campaign chair and former state Sen. Ted Daley as his campaign treasurer.

Honour returned to Minnesota last year after serving as senior managing director of the Gores Group in California, an international investment firm, and has been considering a gubernatorial bid for months, according to Politics in Minnesota.

MPR reports Honour is best known in Minnesota politics for hosting a high dollar, private fundraised for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2012.

Honour also co-hosted a fundraiser for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie last month.

The businessman has appeared at several Republican events lately, the Star Tribune reports. In the last two years, Honour contributed about $90,000 to federal Republican causes and candidates.

Other potential Republican candidates include: Sen. Dave Thompson, R-Lakeville; Jeff Johnson, a Hennepin County commissioner and Republican National Committee member; Senate Minority Leader David Hann; former House Speaker Kurt Zellers; Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek; state Sen. Julie Rosen and Minneapolis attorney Ron Schutz.
