Gophers defensive end Gaelin Elmore will transfer

Another Minnesota Gophers football player announces that he's leaving.

Another starter is transferring from the Gophers football team.

Defensive end Gaelin Elmore announced on Twitter Thursday that he will finish his college football career somewhere else. Elmore becomes the third 2016 Gophers starter to depart Minnesota.

Elmore played in 13 games last season – starting nine of them. He finished the year with 16 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also recovered three fumbles for Minnesota.

His departure will make an already thin Gophers' defensive line even thinner. Minnesota already had to replace two Senior defensive linemen in Scott Ekpe and Hendrick Ekpe. Now the two leading candidates to start at defensive end next fall are sophomores Tai'yon Devers and Winston DeLattiboudere.

As for Elmore, he is graduating from the university this summer with a degree in communication studies. The Star Tribune notes Elmore has agreed not to transfer to a team that will play Minnesota this fall.

Graduate transfer rules will allow Elmore to play this fall.
