The Golden Gophers will be short one of their leading receivers the rest of the season following head coach Tracy Claeys' announcing that Brian Smith has been kicked off the team for violating team rules.
Claeys, in an interview with KFAN, didn't divulge details about Smith's violation.
Smith was second on the team with 17 receptions for 279 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota's top four receivers going forward are Drew Wolitarsky, Rashad Still, Eric Carter and freshman Tyler Johnson.
Quarterback Mitch Leidner has just 5 touchdown passes in seven games this season and the Gophers passing offense is ranked 12th out of 14 teams in the Big Ten.
The Gophers have had off-the-field trouble this season, including restraining orders issued against four players last month.
