Gophers' Mbakwe won't go to jail

Minnesota Gophers forward Trevor Mbakwe was in Florida on Friday for a court hearing as a judge mulled whether a probation violation merited jail time. But the judge ultimately decided that he would offer the NCAA player a lighter sentence: two years probation, 20 hours of community service per month and he must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the Star Tribune reports. He was arrested for DWI in July in Minnetonka, and he had been on probation stemming from a Florida battery charge in 2009.

Tubby Smith won't use Mbakwe's injury as a scapegoat to another rough season

The Gophers have lost five in a row and six of seven in Big Ten play, but head coach Tubby Smith won't be blaming the struggles on the absence of injured star Trevor Mbakwe. Instead, Smith believes his team is struggling psychologically. He says he needs to find a way to boost the players' confidence, and that playing at Wisconsin on Tuesday will be a real test of character.
