Gov. Mark Dayton used his Facebook page to express appreciation to many people who reached out to him when his beloved 10-year-old dog Mesabi died last week.

He wrote:

"My heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone, who took the time to like, comment, or message me after my post about Mesabi’s passing. He would have been pleased with this wonderful outpouring of concern, although he might have preferred a good marrow bone or a jumbo Greenie! Since I’m not into either of them, I have the utmost gratitude for each of you, who shared in my loss with me. It’s also inspiring to realize how many of us love our pets, treasure their lives, and deeply mourn their departures."

Mesabi had surgery to remove his spleen and a likely cancerous tumor, Dayton said. The governor is fan of black German shepherds. He has two others, Wanamingo and Itasca.
