A 16-year-old girl was in critical condition Tuesday in Rochester after her grandfather shot her when he feared an intruder was outside his home late Monday night, the Rochester Post Bulletin reported.
The 61-year-old man told police he and his wife were awakened by a noise outside, the newspaper reports. He got his handgun and told his wife to call police. The man told investigators he saw someone at the back door and he fired two shots, one of which hit the teen in her upper body, police said. She's expected to survive, the Post Bulletin reports.
The girl had been living with her grandparents, but they thought she was already inside the home, the newspaper reports. Police said the grandparents were "extremely shaken."
Fox 47 reported that the girl was shot in the neck, and that the grandfather had realized it was his granddaughter after he turned on a light. No arrests were made, Fox 47 reports.
