Great Lakes move slightly more iron ore in 2012

Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 61.6 million tons last year, an increase of about 245,000 tons from the year before, WDIO reports. However, record-low water levels forced ships to carry much lighter loads.

Coal shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 25.3 million tons in 2012, an 8.2 percent drop from 2011, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The newspaper notes the shipping season for the Twin Ports will officially end early next week when the John G. Munson arrives in Superior. The Soo Locks closed to navigation Tuesday night to undergo annual maintenance and repairs, according to a news release.
