The demand will continue to increase when MSU closes the 1,200-bed Gage Towers in the fall. The Free Press reports construction of two apartment buildings will add 60 units to the area this summer. Another 48-unit building is expected to be ready next year.

Children's Museum announces plans for Mankato

The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota plans to build a permanent home in downtown Mankato, but still needs to raise more than $2 million. So far, the Mankato Free Press reports nearly $1.7 million has been pledged for the $4 million structure. Executive Director Peter Olson has asked the City Council for $250,000 to buy a piece of property next to the Blue Earth County Library. Olson claims the museum would have an annual economic impact of $5 million.

Fewer male teachers in Minnesota despite growing demand

In Minnesota, the Star Tribune reports the number of men teaching has gone from 27 percent to 25 percent over the past decade. The drop comes at a time when schools want to hire more teachers with different backgrounds, including men, minorities and immigrants.

Nearly 5,000 runners converge on Mankato for marathon

The third running of Mankato's marathon drew nearly 5,000 runners to town for the big race, a half marathon, and a 10 kilometer run. Backers say the number of runners taking part - and visitors spending money - has increased each year. This year Paul Donnelly of Minneapolis won the men's race, while Leslie Anderson of Waseca was the women's winner.

Elton John scheduled to play Mankato, Grand Forks

The Mankato Free Press reports the superstar is scheduled to play in Mankato on Sunday, April 22. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, March 5. And WDAY says he'll perform for the first time in Grand Forks on Saturday, March 24. Tickets for that show go on sale at 10 a.m. this Monday. Tickets sold out within minutes for his show in Duluth last year.

Winona homeowners sue city over rental rules

The city says not more than 30 percent of the homes on a block can be rentals, but some homeowners say that rule is illegal and unconstitutional. They say the city is unfairly restricting what they can do with their property and not giving them equal opportunity to obtain rental licenses.
