Gunman in Bagley murder-suicide had dementia, stepson says

The northwestern Minnesota man who's suspected of fatally shooting his mother and later turning a gun on himself Monday suffered from a neurological disorder, according to a relative.

Ben Vorderbruggen, the stepson of the alleged gunman, 41-year-old Jack Gerbracht, tells the Bemidji Pioneer that his stepfather suffered from Pick's disease, a rare and permanent form of dementia similar to Alzheimer's.

Gerbracht's mother, 64-year-old Darlene Gerbracht, lived less than two blocks from the home her son shared with his wife, Sara, and their two daughters.

Vorderbruggen says the "very progressive disease affects impulse control." Pick's disease also claimed the lives of Jack Gerbracht's father and brother.

Police continue to investigate.
