Hamline University appoints its 20th president

Hamline University has revealed that its 20th president will be Dr. Fayneese Miller.

Taking over from retiring Linda Hanson this summer, Dr. Miller is currently the dean of the College of Education and Social Services and professor of leadership and developmental sciences at the University of Vermont.

Hamline says that she will be the first African-American president in the 162-year history of the St. Paul-based institution – the oldest university in Minnesota – and only the second female president.

"Dr. Miller is a dynamic, articulate, and inclusive leader with a strong commitment to diversity and deep experience in academic program development, fiscal management, and fundraising," said Bob Klas, Jr., chair of the Hamline University Board of Trustees, in a news release.

"She is a champion of collaborative governance and values voices of students, faculty, and staff. We feel she will be an exceptional president for our campus community," he added.

Dr. Miller has 30 years of academic and higher education leadership experience – the release notes – 20 of which were spent at Brown University.

She was also the director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America and in 1991 became the first native-born African-American woman to be promoted to associate professor with tenure at Brown.

"I am honored to be selected as the 20th president of Hamline University," she said, "an institution that values social justice, equity, inclusion, and civic engagement through its service-learning opportunities for students, curriculum offerings, and innocence initiative."
