Happy Birthday, YG! 5 things you might not know

Happy 27th, sir.

Today is YG's 27th birthday.

Here are five things you might not know about the Compton rapper, who was born Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson in 1990.

YG has come a long way since his debut single

YG's commercial debut came in the form of 2010's "Toot It and Boot It," featuring Ty Dolla $ign and produced by DJ Mustard. The song hit the 67 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 and the records traction resulted in YG signing to Def Jam Records.

In 2014, YG told HipHopDX that he didn't like his verses on his first hit single because he didn't write them, rather the other song collaborators pre-wrote the song. YG explained that track was something to show for the six months he spent studio with DJ Mustard, who was new to production at the time. Their consistency paid off, as the seven-year-old "Toot It and Boot It" video has over 32 million views and all three of the artists on the song have put out multiple successful singles, albums, and videos.

He runs his own record label

YG launched 4Hunnid Records in 2015, then last year Billboard reported that he signed a joint venture with Interscope. YG told Billboard that the label will have a family-oriented, West Coast vibe and give artists born from struggle an opportunity to shine.

So far, there aren't many clear signees to the label besides an R&B singer named Tanea. When you click the link in YG's Twitter biography for the label's website, it says "be right back" and there's a spot to enter your email to receive updates.

He once created a short film

In the description of the film's trailer, YG states, "The short film "Blame It On the Streets" is basically the life behind a couple of records off My Krazy Life." In the trailer, there's drive by, car chase, and gunshots as a narrator lists off things like murder, robberies, kidnapping, and mayhem.

Alex Nazari directed the film, but YG executive produced it and wrote the script adding his own sense of humor to the project. The film is under a half hour and you can watch it on YouTube and Vimeo.

YG is vegan

Last summer, YG told the Breakfast Club he opted for a vegan diet. He said, “I went vegan. It’s hard to stay vegan and eat right when you’re moving around so much, but I’ve been off that alkaline water heavy, though.”

He went on to tell Charlamagne and the gang that preventing cancer and learning about what goes into processed food influenced him to make the lifestyle change. YG added that his daughter is following suit.

When asked about veganism by Pitchfork, YG said his mom's reaction was "I don't know what's gotten into you!" In the same interview, he defends wearing TOMS Shoes which come in vegan options, by saying that the easy, slip-on shoes are just like the ones he wore in county jail.

Cops tried to shut down "FDT" video

Speaking of law enforcement, when YG posted an open invitation for people to joint the "FDT" video set to support his anti-Trump collaboration with Nipsey Hussle, the cops weren't having it.

In the Instagram videos below, you can see the crowd getting broken up by the police and Nipsey Hussle pushing his way to the front of the crowd with his hands up.
