Happy first day of summer? It was 34 degrees in parts of Minnesota this morning

Severe storms are possible tonight, though.

Nothing like starting out the first full day of summer with temperatures just above freezing.

That's what people in Embarrass and Brimson did. Those were the coldest places in Minnesota Wednesday morning at 34 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.

Much of Minnesota is seeing below-average temps for this time of year. This trend is expected to continue through the weekend, with temps 5-15 degrees below normal in the Northland, the weather service says.

Despite the fall-like weather to start the day, it'll feel more like summer later on. Wednesday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, and isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across much of Minnesota in the late afternoon into tonight, the weather service says.

Much of central and southern Minnesota have a "slight risk" of severe weather Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center says. The weather service says large hail and damaging winds are the main risks for the southern part of the state.

Meanwhile, the Northland isn't expected to get as severe weather. The agency says "weak" thunderstorms are possible there.
