Hennepin Co. sheriff warns of thin ice, open water on area lakes

With climbing temperatures and even open water in some instances, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office wants to make sure people are aware of thinning ice on area lakes, WCCO-TV reports.

The Sheriff's Office noted specifically the open water on Lake Minnetonka, the location of most of the incidents over the winter. In all 24 of the 25 cars that broke through the ice in Hennepin County were on Lake Minnetonka.

Two of the incidents on Lake Minnetonka resulted in three fatalities.

Officials urge people to avoid channels on lakes, to wear life jackets if you take a snowmobile or ATV over the ice, and to keep pets on a leash.

Most of all, the Sheriff's Office warns, no ice is safe.
