Here are this year's most popular Halloween costumes

Hint: If you want a unique costume, don't be Harley Quinn.

If you're having a hard time picking a Halloween costume, or you just want to know what other people will be dressing up as, Google Trends has your back.

Google Trends' Frightgeist website shows which Halloween costumes are trending nationally and locally. It also offers costume suggestions based on what you're looking for.

Trending costumes

This year, the hottest costumes in the U.S. are:

  1. Harley Quinn
  2. The Joker
  3. Superheroes
  4. Pirates
  5. Wonder Woman

When searching locally from the Twin Cities, the trending costumes are:

  1. Harley Quinn
  2. The Renaissance
  3. Dinosaurs
  4. Superheroes
  5. Zombies

Google says the chances of seeing people in those costumes are pretty high.

The website also shows the top trending costumes in different cities. Duluth's is Yoda, Mankato's is Pikachu, and Rochester's is witch. The top costume in the Twin Cities, Fargo, Sioux Falls, and Eau Claire is Harley Quinn.

So basically, don't be Harley Quinn if you're looking for a unique costume.

The website also has a "costume wizard" costume generator for people who haven't picked a costume yet.

Just adjust your "spookiness level," set your "uniqueness level," pick a style and let Google Trends do the rest.
