Hermantown wins second straight state championship

The best state championship game ever?

In one of the wildest state tournament games ever played, the Hermantown Hawks defeated the Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake Moose 4-3 in the Class A state championship game on Saturday.

The game was tied at 3 after regulation, and it was settled in double overtime.

Ten minutes into the second overtime period, it appeared Hermantown had won the game, but the goal was overturned due to goaltender interference.

Hermantown had thrown their gear and were celebrating as if they won the game. However after the goal was overturned, the team had to pick up their stuff which was scattered all over the ice.

Finally as the double overtime was winding down, Dylan Samberg sealed the deal with 19.4 seconds remaining. This time the goal counted.

MAML had a remarkable run at this year's state tournament.

In the program's first trip to the tournament, they knocked off second-seeded Delano, then Northfield and pushed heavily favored Hermantown to double overtime.
