History is made: More than 1.9 million visitors attended the 2016 State Fair

An all-time record year for the Minnesota State Fair was a virtual certainty going into Labor Day, and now it's confirmed by officials.

In total, 1,943,719 people passed through the gates at the State Fairgrounds over the 12 days of the fair, smashing the previous record of 1,824,830 set in 2014, it was announced on Tuesday.

Perfect weather conditions (not too hot, not too wet) attracted visitors in droves, with three record days set during the course of the fair – including the biggest ever single-day attendance of 260,374 set on the second Saturday.

On Labor Day, 158,027 people attended, pushing this year's State Fair past the record.

Another record was set at the Grandstand. This year's concert lineup's total attendance of 111,319 was the highest it has ever been for the venue, aided by two sold-out Dixie Chicks shows.

The State Fair also said more than $1.4 million in prize money was awarded after more than 30,000 entries were put forward in the various agricultural and creative competitions held this year.
