Before she took the oath of office Thursday, new mayor Betsy Hodges made a separate promise to the children of Minneapolis.

As the Star Tribune reports, Hodges told a group of kids assembled at the ceremony that she will work to ensure the community is good and kind to one another. The children, in turn, told Mayor Hodges they pledged to help make Minneapolis a great city.

The event, which Hodges called a "kids inaugural" kicked off a ten-day tour of the city, during which the mayor will emphasize a different topic each day, MinnPost reports. The tour will also reprise Hodges' "One Minneapolis" campaign theme, in which she stressed equality of opportunity for all of the city's residents.

KSTP has a schedule of the themes, which include transportation, public safety, the arts, and tourism.

Politico reports Hodges was among several mayors and mayors-elect who were in Washington, D.C., last week to meet with each other and with President Obama. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tells the website that – with Washington increasingly bound up in gridlock – mayors will increasingly take the lead on issues including immigration and education policy.

Hodges' oath brought an end to R.T. Rybak's 12 years in city hall. Rybak maintained an irreverent tone to the end, using Twitter during the waning hours of his administration to take a playful poke at a certain Canadian mayor.

CNN was among the media outlets that circulated Rybak's reference to Toronto's mayor.
