'Hogwarts House' in Minneapolis on market for $2.7M

Forget about going to the movies: A Minneapolis mansion that's described by its owner as a cross between "The Lord of the Rings" and the Hogwarts castle from the "Harry Potter" film series can now be yours.

The catch is, it will cost you $2.7 million.

FOX 9 says Jeff Arundel's fantasy pad, dubbed the "Hogwarts House," has been on the market for 140 days, but still has no takers.

A musician and New Age composer, Arundel tells the station that people gasp when they enter his home. The Middle Earth motif of the residence includes Gothic arches, elaborate staircases, massive fireplaces and stained glass. It also includes meticulous metal work by artist Paul Tierney.

The structure, located on 10th Avenue South in the Downtown East neighborhood, was once a blacksmith shop and mechanic's garage, says Arundel.

The Hogwarts House was spotlighted in 2011 in a Minnesota Public Radio "Minnesota Architecture" feature. At the time the article was published, Arundel had the residence listed at $3.5 million.

Arundel, who also owns the Astor Cafe, bought the building from former Star Tribune publishers John and Sage Cowles a decade ago, and had it stripped down to its bare bones.

The $2.7 million residence is a bargain compared to some of the other prestigious homes currently up for sale in the Twin Cities area.

Earlier this month, the the Minneapolis Luxury Real Estate Blog said the Pillsbury Mansion in Wayzata – once listed for $53 million – was reduced to a selling price of $24 million.

Zillow.com says the mansion, located at 1400 Bracketts Point Rd. in Wayzata, is the most expensive listing in Minnesota. The 32,461-square-foot spread has a mortgage payment of about $94,306 a month.
