Hole-lotta trouble: Man accused of drunken joyride in excavator

Publish date:

A 27-year-old Proctor man is accused of taking a Caterpillar excavator for a joyride up onto a Duluth sidewalk, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

State troopers arrested the man in the massive digging machine in the wee hours of March 9, with what they said was a blood-alcohol level of twice the legal limit, the newspaper reports.

A trooper discovered the driver in the excavator just west of downtown, shortly after 3:30 a.m., and he admitted to stealing the towering piece of construction equipment, authorities said.

He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and second-degree DWI.

Minnesotans on occasion have commandeered a number of vehicles ill-suited for joyrides, including a St. Cloud teen who made it a half-mile in a bulldozer. Last year a man in St. Paul briefly stole a bus, perhaps the same man who took off with a Pepsi truck.

A 14-year-old St. Paul boy admitted last month that he took a school bus for a joyride that ended at a gas station.
